ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction In 2020, suicide was the third leading cause of death in Mexico among young people ages 15 and 29, accounting for 43.0% of all suicides in the country, making it a major public health issue. Objective To explore changes in the geographic distribution of suicide rates by state and to analyze the magnitude, distribution, and pattern of suicide mortality in young Mexicans ages 15 to 29 between 1990 and 2020. Method Descriptive, ecological time-series study, based on official information. Standardized mortality rates were calculated using information on deaths (INEGI) and population estimates (CONAPO). The magnitude, distribution, and patterns of suicide mortality at the national level and by state were analyzed using the Joinpoint segmented regression model. Results From 1990 to 2020, suicide mortality in young people increased by 198% and was higher in women (285%) than men (178%). The states with the highest suicide mortality rates from 2016 to 2020 were Chihuahua (18.5 suicides/100,000 young people ages 15-29), Aguascalientes (16.6), Yucatán (14.4), Guanajuato (14.1), and San Luis Potosí (12.9), accounting for 23.0% of total suicide deaths. Discussion and conclusion The study of mortality trends could contribute to the management of a national suicide prevention strategy in young Mexicans, providing support for public health decision-making, such as the identification of the states and regions that should be prioritized.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Consumption has been established in postmodern societies as a means of regulating social relations. In this context, compulsive buying could be established as pathological, creating significant psychological discomfort in people, to the point of impairing social and professional functioning, coupled with serious economic problems resulting from indebtedness. Along the same lines, in the construction of a social identity and a socially shared reality, consumption patterns arise that are linked to what the public should be and what they want to be. Therefore, while compulsive buying has been conceptualized for decades, it is a substantial threat to psychological and financial well-being. Few studies have explored the link between self-discrepancy and compulsive buying within an identity construction context. In this scenario, it is young people who become particularly sensitive, since with consumption they access symbolic objects that are part of their identity construction and a dimension related to compulsive buying. Therefore, it can be hypothesized that access to the consumption of symbolic elements is self-discrepancy. That is why this research aims at determining the effect of the self-discrepancy on attitudes towards compulsive buying in Chilean university students. The study uses a quantitative, correlational, and non-experimental cross-sectional design. Study sample was comprised of 1 229 Chilean university students, who responded to the scale of attitudes towards consumption, the self-discrepancy scale, and answered questions for sociodemographic characterization including: gender (male/female), age, geographical area of residence (rural/urban), people with whom they live, and whether they have any bank credit cards. Prior to data collection, a letter was sent to Faculty Deans and Program Directors of all the universities associated with the Council of Rectors of Chile; these letters described the aims of the study, and requested information and authorization for the distribution of the instrument previously described. It is important to indicate that, after this, a random sampling process was initiated, after which each participant was contacted, so that they could sign an informed consent form, thus ensuring the anonymity ethical guidelines of the study. The data was processed through SPSS version 22 software, looking for the presence of univariate and multivariate outliers through Z-scores and Mahalanobis distance. A descriptive analysis of the variables was then carried out based on the dispersion, central trend and shape measurements. Subsequently, the data was analysed through bivariate statistics through Pearson correlations, to indicate into empirical relationships between compulsive purchase as a dependent variable and sociodemographic variables (sex and bank credit card holding) and the dimensions associated with the self-discrepancy (intellectual, physical, physical beauty, personal, social, emotional and economic) as independent variables. Once the behaviour of the variables was observed, a hierarchical multiple linear regression was performed. Regarding the results of this research, multiple linear regression shows that physical self-discrepancy (beauty), economic self-discrepancy and gender are significant predictors of compulsive buying. Similarly, it is noted that women are a group with higher scores in terms of compulsive purchases than men, which may be mostly affected by the context, where marketing campaigns can influence a greater gap between the real self and the ideal self.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Even today, death is a taboo topic, strongly associated with aging. However, the number of young people who become involved in unexpected situations, such as traffic accidents and attempted murders, is worrying, leading them to face their finitude. OBJECTIVE: To understand and analyze the experience of young survivors of traffic accidents and attempted homicides. METHOD: Open interviews were carried out with eight young people, aged between 19 and 29 years old, who live in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul and who survived traffic accidents or attempted homicides. The interviews were guided by a semi-structured script and were analyzed from the perspective of Content Analysis. RESULTS: The speech of the young people interviewed points to the existential implications of the changes imposed by the intercurrences, especially from the impacts they caused, changing both their routines and the way they thought and lived. In addition, this experience also had implications for the perception of body image, in addition to changes in other areas of the interviewees' lives, such as work, studies, as well as family and friendship relationships that were also affected. CONCLUSION: A better understanding of these experiences is needed, in order to contribute to the development of health strategies that help these young people to deal with the consequences of events that are often serious and permanent.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This article evaluates the affective/sexual relations among young people, seeking to identify possible remnants of the so-called "romantic love", from the comparison between genders. Among other things, we work with values, expectations and behaviors related to several topics, such as: friendship, marriage, family, the desire to have children, professional recognition, perspective of permanence, stability, machismo, individualism, fluidity of relationships, fidelity. And for this matter, we analyzed a sample of 1,282 responses received from heterosexual students from the University of Brasília. In general, we found a wide dispersion in students´s opinions. However, it does not result from the difference between genders: male and female students presented themselves very similar to each other.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the effect of myopia on retinal vascular geometry in young subjects. Methods:A retrospective cross-sectional study. From June 2018 to December 2018, 235 participants (235 eyes) who took part in routine physical examination in Huadong Sanatorium were included. There were 94 males and 141 females; age was (34.89±6.15) years old; equivalent spherical refraction (SE) was (-3.78±3.25) D. 59 (25.11%, 59/235) were divided into high myopia group (SE≤-6.0 D), along with 131 (55.74%, 131/235) low to moderate myopia group (-0.5 D> SE>-6.0 D), and 45 (19.15%, 45/235) emmetropia group (0.5 D≥SE≥-0.5 D). Retinal vascular geometric measurements, including central retinal arteriolar equivalent (CRAE), central retinal venular equivalent (CRVE), fractal dimension arteriole (FDa), fractal dimension venule (FDv), curvature tortuosity arteriole (CTORTa), curvature tortuosity venule, branch angle arteriole (BAa), branch angle venule, branch coefficient arteriole and branching coefficient venule, were extracted by using a validated computer program. One-way analysis of variance and analysis of covariance were performed to compare the measurements across the high myopia, low to moderate myopia, and emmetropia groups. Linear regression analysis was used to explore the relationship between SE and retinal vascular geometric parameters. Results:The differences in CRAE ( F=65.11), CRVE ( F=61.52), FDa (F=14.26), FDv ( F=8.31), CTORTa ( F=5.07) and BAa (F=6.51) among eys of high myopia group, low to moderate myopia group and emmetropia group remained significant ( P<0.05) after adjusting for age, glycosylated hemoglobin, mean arterial pressure, body mass index, and intraocular pressure. CRAE and CRVE were linearly correlated with the SE ( P<0.05). FDa, FDv, cTORTa and BAa decreased with the decrease of SE in high myopia ( P<0.05). Conclusions:Myopia is associated with the change of the retinal vascular geometric characteristics. With the deepening of myopia, the change of retinal vascular geometric characteristics gradually worsens.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo discuss the correlation between young patients’ adverse transfusion reaction and pre-transfusion C reactive protein (CRP) level and EO% (percentage of eosinophils) . MethodsThe observation group was chosen from among sixty-six young patients who experienced transfusion-related adverse events between January 2019 and December 2020. For each patient chosen to be included in the observation group, another patient from the same department, with the same disease and gender, who had been hospitalized in the same month and received the same type of blood product transfusion, but had not experienced any transfusion-related adverse effects, was chosen to be in the control group. We examined and compared their ages, transfusion experiences, allergy backgrounds, EO%, and CRP levels in peripheral blood prior to transfusion. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to examine the diagnostic value of EO% and CRP for transfusion-related adverse events. Simultaneously, a logistic analysis was performed on the risk factors for transfusion-related adverse events. ResultsPre-transfusion CRP was higher in patients with FNHTR in the observation group than it was in patients in the control group; pre-transfusion CRP was also higher in patients with ATR in the observation group than it was in patients in the control group. There were also statistically significant differences between these variables in the percentage of patients with transfusion history and pre-transfusion EO% ( P<0.05). For the transfusion of different blood types, there was statistical significance in the occurrence of ATR and FNHTR ( P<0.05). For the diagnosis of FNHTR, the CRP area under the ROC curve was 0.889, and the best cut-off value was 18.05 mg/L. For the diagnosis of ATR, the area under the ROC curve was 0.749, and the best cut-off values were 17.60 mg/L. ConclusionPre-transfusion C-reactive protein level is an independent risk factor for FNHTR and ATR in young patients; the predictive value of EO% for adverse blood transfusion reactions is insufficient.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: The objective of this article is to enter some productions about youth and generations, having as basis for analysis the ideological decadence, coined by Georg Lukács. With this I intend to affirm that the bases of some specializations contribute to the dissemination of concepts guided by expressions of the social issue attributed to the subjects individually, in a kind of affirmation of subject essence, which carries determinability, i.e., are impregnated with a depreciative ontology of the human.

ABSTRACT

Abstract (analytical) The Narrative Biographical Method was applied with six young women who live in marginal contexts. Their biographical narratives were identified through a narrative design in which they shared the ways in which they have configured relationships with their partners around the practices and discourses of symbolic violence. The study exposes a reality of violence in this population that is associated with institutional abandonment and collective allegations. The analysis of the information was carried out using a Biogram, which allowed the authors to identify that depoliticization and idealization are how these women have built their relationships. The study is relevant because it raises awareness about existing power mechanisms that support the transforming of couple relationships, which is usually encouraged by other women.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana consumption is highly prevalent among emerging adult college students. One of the variables influencing the consumption of these three psychoactive substances is the perception of risk associated with such behavior. This work examined bivariate and multivariate relationships between risk perception of alcohol, tobacco and marijuana use, and the use of those substances, in Argentinian emerging adults that attend college. Additionally, we analyzed differences in risk perception in regards of gender. A sample of 279 college students (75.6% women; M age = 23.02; SD = 3.36) completed an online survey. We used a non-probabilistic and accidental sampling. We found significant differences in risk perception as a function of gender and type of consumption (i.e., with/without heavy episodic drinking [HED], with or without tobacco/marijuana use). Being men and exhibiting a higher frequency of HED, tobacco or marijuana consumption were significantly associated to the perception of a lower risk attributed to each substance. These findings suggests that frequent and intensive substance use behaviors could be the focus for interventions to correct risk perceptions.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Around 300 million people in the world suffer from depression and anxiety. Both have become, according to the main organizations, one of the first causes of disability and lost work years on the planet. Not to mention that depression is one of the main antecedents of deaths by suicide. Both have a special impact on young populations and adolescents. In Colombia the data is not more encouraging, around 53 % of the young people has at least one symptom of anxiety and 80 % have at least one symptom of depression. Given this data, anxiety and depression constitute important health problems that require sufficient attention. On the other hand, the meaning in life has become an important salutogenic variable in younger populations. Recent research has shown that the meaning in life is related to the reduction of risk behaviors, such as the consumption of psychoactive substances, and is a protective factor against different health problems, ranging from cardiovascular events to the reduction of the appearance of anxious and depressive symptoms. Based on the above, the objective of this study was to identify how the meaning in life is associated with anxiety and depression in adolescents and young people. The data of 596 Colombian participants whose ages ranged between 18 and 24 years (M = 21; SD = 1.74; 68 % women and 32 % men) were analyzed, the only condition to participate was knowing how to read and write. The Dimensional Meaning Life Scale and the Scale for Depression, Anxiety and Stress (DASS-21) were used. Firstly, significant differences were found in the meaning in life scores in the participants who reported a diagnosis of disease, consumption of psychoactive substances and socioeconomic condition. The highest meaning scores were obtained by people who did not have a diagnosis of medical or psychological illness, who did not consume any psychoactive substances, and people in the highest socioeconomic status. Likewise, there were differences for anxiety and depression, people with a diagnosis of disease and who consume psychoactive substances had higher scores for both anxiety and depression. Women had higher anxiety scores, and people from the lowest socioeconomic conditions had the highest scores for depression. A model resulting from an analysis of structural equations based on partial least squares is presented. The model had adequate fit indices (NFI = .84; SRMR = .06). The meaning in life was negatively and significantly associated with anxiety and depression. The path coefficients of the latent variable meaning in life show an impact of -.49 on anxiety and -.71 on depression. According to the R squared values, the meaning of life explains 24 % of the presence of anxiety symptoms and around 51 % of depression. Regarding the measurement model, both the Dimensional Meaning in Life Scale and the Scale for Depression, Anxiety and Stress (DASS-21) showed excellent adjustments in the measurement and operationalization of the latent variables. The results found present implications for research, and they also constitute empirical support to include the variable in intervention and prevention programs that can be objectively evaluated and reduce anxiety and depression scores in adolescents and young people, which would also allow to reduce all the negative consequences associated with both pathologies. Other projections and limitations associated with what was found in this research are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Abstract In the face of the dominance of neoliberalism in Western societies the possibilities of consumption are overwhelming. This type of societies are associated with a consumerist culture and lifestyle, where the capacity of consumption is the fundamental criterion of inclusion/exclusion of the subjects. Consumption intervenes significantly in the construction of people's personal and social identity. The desires and longings generated by the consumer society are related to the acquisition of lifestyles. In this sense, subjects give meaning to objects and experiences. The interest of this research is in young people. Young people represent a segment of interest for the economic market; therefore, they constitute a group that is financially in risk. The high levels of indebtedness of the youth population in Chile must be considered. Specifically, men handle money from a young age and carry out certain paid activities, especially in popular sectors. Men are projected as active consumers in the economic market, an area where the traditional gender division has diminished, directing men to production and women to consumption. On the other hand, empirical evidence shows the association between masculinities and material possessions, money and orientation to success. It is also possible to mention a relative scarcity of studies linking men and consumption in Latin America. In this context, the present article explores the meaning of consumption as constructed by university men in three areas of professional training, who are pursuing undergraduate careers, in the Araucanía Region. A qualitative methodology is used to achieve the research objective, applying the technique of natural semantic networks. A case study is carried out. The sample was conformed by students of Social Sciences (18 subjects), Health Sciences (15 subjects) and Engineering Sciences (18 subjects), aged between 18 and 24 years old, with a total of 51 subjects. ABSTRACT

Abstract This study reports on the qualitative phase of a study that seeks to design a digital intervention for the prevention of STI / HIV and promotion of sexual health in university students. The experience and perception that university students have about sexuality, risk and prevention campaigns are addressed through focus groups. Semi-structured interviews are conducted with key informants. The results reveal that sexual education is limited and restricted to the biological aspect, as well as loaded with prejudices and gender biases, which narrows the information provided to the student population. Wavering prevention strategies that fail to motivate students or offer them opportunities for making informed and independent decisions about their sexual health are apparent. The STI / HIV campaigns assessed are distant, fear-based and not inclusive. Interventions in sexual health do not weigh experiential aspects of youth sexuality, as they are based on models of ideal and stereotyped behavior, discarding first-person narratives and their rich complexity. It is imperative to innovate in the prevention of STI/HIV, formulating interventions based on an integrative, multidisciplinary and contextualized design that values the theory and experience of the target populations.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Objective: This paper describes sexual behaviours and their associated factors among young people. Design: The study design is cross-sectional. Setting: Dodowa Health and Demographic Surveillance Site (DHDSS) in Ghana's Shai-Osudoku and Ningo Prampram districts. Participants: Young people aged 10 to 24 years, median age 17 years. Outcome measures: Self-reported to have ever had sex, non-use of a condom at last sex, and ever been pregnant or gotten someone pregnant. Results: Of the 1689 young people; 42% reported having ever had sex, not using a condom at last sexual activity (64%), and ever been pregnant or gotten someone pregnant (41%). The proportion of non-use of condoms at last sex was high across all age groups but was highest (93%) in a small proportion of 10 to 14-year-olds who have ever had sex. Higher proportions of females than males; were reported to have ever had sex (46%), not using a condom at their last sex (66%) and ever been pregnant or getting someone pregnant (56%). Age group (20 to 24), females, primary or junior high school, living alone and lower household socio-economic status were risk factors associated with all three outcome measures. Conclusion: Risky sexual behaviour is high among young people in the Dodowa HDSS. Therefore, interventions that promote safer sexual practices and help young people make timely decisions on their sexual and reproductive health care needs are required.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the common risk factors of intracerebral hemorrhage(ICH) in young people and to establish a predictive model of nomogram. Methods:The relevant data of young patients with ICH (≤45 years ) hospitalized in the Department of Neurosurgery of Dezhou people's Hospital from January 2014 to August 2021 were retrospectively studied, and the young group who underwent physical examination in the Physical Examination Center of Dezhou people's Hospital at the same time were randomly selected as the control group. Analyze the risk factors that may affect cerebral hemorrhage in young people, screen the risk factors with statistical differences through single factor analysis, screen the independent risk factors according to multi factor Logistic regression analysis, construct the risk nomogram model of cerebral hemorrhage in young people, and test the efficiency, goodness of fit and benefit of the constructed model through internal validation. Results:Compared with the control group, there were statistically significant differences in family history (χ 2=115.66, P<0.001), hypertension grade( Z=17.67, P<0.001), smoking history (χ 2=33.91, P<0.001), drinking grade ( Z=4.84, P<0.001), body mass index (BMI) ( t=11.76, P<0.001), low density lipoprotein ( t=4.78, P<0.001), high density lipoprotein cholesterol ( t=5.83, P<0.001),blood glucose ( Z=5.68, P<0.001) and homocysteine ( Z=2.22, P<0.001) in the case group. Binary Logistic regression analysis showed that hypertension grade ( OR=3.457, 95%CI: 2.809-4.254, P<0.001), family history ( OR=2.871, 95%CI:1.868-4.413, P<0.001), BMI ( OR=1.093, 95%CI:1.040-1.148, P<0.001), high density lipoprotein cholesterol ( OR=0.230, 95%CI:0.111-0.480, P<0.001), blood glucose ( OR=3.457, 95%CI:2.809-4.254, P<0.001), homocysteine (O R=3.457, 95%CI:2.809-4.254, P<0.001) was an independent risk factor for intracerebral hemorrhage in young adults. The nomogram prediction model showed that BMI was 96 points, hypertension grade was 100 points, family history was 30 points, high density lipoprotein cholesterol was 76 points, homocysteine was 48 points, blood glucose was 52 points, homocysteine was 48 points and blood glucose was 52 points, respectively. The consistency coefficient of the prediction model was 0.874. The nomogram dependent ROC curve AUC was 0.891, and the corresponding sensitivity and specificity were 74.5% (263/353) and 89.7% (437/487), respectively, a nomogram model was established with good diagnostic efficiency. Conclusion:The nomogram model established in this study can predict the probability of intracerebral hemorrhage in high-risk population, and take intervention measures as early as possible to prevent the occurrence of intracerebral hemorrhage in young people.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the prognostic risk factors of young patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) in emergency department (ED), so as to improve the efficiency of emergency treatment and diversion of these patients. Methods:A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of young patients with UGIB in the ED of Hainan Provincial People's Hospital from January 1, 2019 to December 30, 2020. In-hospital mortality was the primary endpoint of the study, and admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and length of hospital stay were the secondary endpoints. Inclusion criteria: (1) patients met the diagnostic criteria of acute UGIB; (2) age ranged from 18 to 40 years old; and (3) complete clinical data. Exclusion criteria: (1) bleeding and hemoptysis from the mouth, nose and throat; (2) gastrointestinal bleeding occurred in hospital; (3) lower gastrointestinal bleeding; (4) incomplete clinical data. Results:Among the 383 patients, 268 (70.0%) underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, and the most frequent endoscopic diagnoses were duodenal ulcer (64.6%) and esophageal-gastric varices bleeding (16.8%). Seventy-one (18.5%) patients required endoscopic treatment, 5 (1.3%) patients required surgical treatment, and 7 (1.8%) patients required intervention treatment. The mortality rate was 2.1%, the ICU admission rate was 2.3%, and the length of hospital stay was 5 (3, 6) d. The ICU admission rate and mortality rate were significantly higher in patients with liver disease and in patients with syncope/coma (all P<0.05). Patients with thrombocyte levels (<120×10 9/L) had a significantly longer length of hospital stay than that of patients with normal platelets [8 (5, 11) d vs. 4 (3, 6) d, P<0.001]. The dead patients had significantly higher white blood cell count, urea nitrogen, creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and activated partial thrombin time levels (all P<0.05), and significantly lower hemoglobin, albumin, SpO 2 and Glasgow coma score (GCS) levels (all P<0.05). Low GCS was an independent risk factor of ICU admission ( OR=33.973, 95% CI: 1.582~729.417, P=0.024) and mortality ( OR=20.583, 95% CI: 1.368~309.758, P=0.029). Conclusions:The poor prognostic factors of young patients with UGIB in ED are concomitant liver disease, syncope/coma, co-infection, hyperazotemia, impaired kidney function, liver dysfunction, coagulopathy, anemia, and low SpO 2, low GCS, and low hypoproteinemia on admission.

ABSTRACT

A scoping review of systematic reviews was carried out to identify evidence of efficacy, effectiveness, and costeffectiveness of universal and selective suicide prevention programs among university students worldwide. Five databases were reviewed using terms in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The following were the inclusion criteria: systematic review or meta-analysis or meta-synthesis, suicide prevention in college students, evaluation of the efficacy, effectiveness and/or cost-effectiveness of interventions, and peer-reviewed studies. The quality of reviews was assessed. The field of study features three decades of publication in high-income countries. The strategy used, the components of the program, and the target audience to which they are delivered interfere with efficacy. In the psychoeducation strategy, the experiential and didactic components are more efficacious in the knowledge about suicide. And the motivational enhancement component promotes greater self-efficacy in suicide prevention. Programs that take a multimodal approach are effective in increasing short-term attitudes related to suicide and reducing rates of completed suicide. The gatekeeper strategy delivered to peer counselors is the most effective one in the outcomes, including short-term and long-term knowledge about suicide and its prevention and self-efficacy in suicide prevention. A greater number of evaluated studies of gatekeeper interventions were identified, indicating a trend in this research field. No review addressed the effects on subgroups that were classified based on sex, racial or sexual minorities, and special (indigenous) populations. Only one study addressed cost-effectiveness, pointing out that the psychoeducation and gatekeeper strategies have relevant net benefit rates, but the gatekeeper strategy has a higher cost-benefit ratio compared to the psychoeducation strategy. The findings indicate that psychoeducation and gatekeeper interventions tend to be more efficacious when they combine education and skills training to intervene in suicidal behavior. The components of the intervention and the target audience to which it is delivered influence efficacy. Multimodal interventions evaluate completed suicide outcomes, but require greater implementation efforts, in terms of human and financial resources and more time for the evaluation. (AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Memory politics have been studied from the social sciences mainly in institutional environments, but their approach in everyday life perspective is scarce. This article contributes to this perspective by presenting the results of a study that sought to understand the construction of memories of Chile's recent past (1970-1990) and its political effects from the daily lives of young people. Interviews were carried out with 33 young people selected from different socioeconomic levels, ideological positions and ties in relation to the conflict of political repression experienced during the military dictatorship. From the discursively analyzed material, it is evident that, for young people, conversations with family members are fundamental spaces for making memory, where their position is mediated by being considered not a legitimate voice to remember a past not directly experienced by them. In the same way, the memories built by young people are characterized by fragmentation and connection with everyday life. It is concluded that although the above has implied in depoliticizing memory, it also potentially installs its politicization.
